WhatsApp account banned: how to request a review and recover your number, personal or business
A banned WhatsApp account is one WhatsApp itself has shut off because it believes the account broke the Terms of Service. Open the official app and tap Request review: the Help Center says most reviews finish within 24 hours. If the button is missing, the ban is final. Below are the on-screen notices, appeal templates and the separate path for businesses on the API.

What you'll take away
- The official path is tapping Request review in the app; most reviews finish within 24 hours, and with no button the ban is final
- Each notice needs its own response: restricted, in review, temporarily banned, banned and, on the API, 1 to 30 day limits, account locks and disabling
- Appeal templates for people and companies, error codes, a checklist and a plan to reach customers on other channels without dodging the penalty
WhatsApp account banned: what to do now, in the right order
A banned WhatsApp account is one WhatsApp itself has shut off because it believes the account broke the Terms of Service. When you open the app you see “This phone number can't use WhatsApp”, followed by the number. The first step is simple: read the notice carefully, take a screenshot with the date and time, and tap Request review if the button is there.
The WhatsApp Help Center says most reviews finish within 24 hours and that you get a notification once there is a decision. That timing is not a promise. An August 2026 report by Brazilian news site g1 heard from people who had been locked out for more than a month, and complaints logged by Brazil's Reclame Aqui mention people who requested a review and still could not recover the account.
If the button does not appear, the same page is blunt: the ban is final and can't be appealed. Guidance published by Brazil's Tribuna de Minas adds that a missing button may mean a review has already been done. The Help Center also warns that an account may be banned because of earlier use of the number. If your SIM is newly bought, say so in the request.
While banned, you can't reach your chat history or backups. A backup only comes back once the ban on its phone number is lifted, and a cloud backup stays tied to the number that created it. So keep the SIM active and the official app installed: both the request and the answer go through the app, and later you must verify the account with the same number.
A company that lost its number does the same thing in the WhatsApp Business app. Anyone on the official API follows a different path, in Business Manager, covered further down. In both cases, tell customers through another channel while you wait, because the answer may take time and customers have no idea what happened.
How to request a review of a banned number, in the app and the Help Center
In the personal app the path is short today. Open official WhatsApp, wait for the ban screen, tap Request review and send whatever information the screen asks for. Then wait for the notification and open the app to see the decision. Sending several requests does not speed up the answer.
The WhatsApp Business app uses the same button. According to the walkthrough published by Tribuna de Minas on August 3, the account owner picks the reason they believe the block was a mistake. The Help Center recommends including information that confirms your claim, and it warns that a Meta Verified subscription is lost with the ban.
The Help Center is not a second counter. Its “About account bans” page says contacting WhatsApp outside the review process, or through another person's account, won't speed things up or affect the decision. Use it to read the rules and find the right article: account bans, restricted accounts, temporarily banned accounts and unofficial apps each have their own page.
Many guides still tell you to write to a support email, and each one quotes a different address. The version of the Terms of Service that applies outside Europe, checked on November 2, 2026, lists no email for disputing a suspension. The version for the European Economic Area, in force since August 17, 2026, gives support@support.whatsapp.com. Outside the EEA, treat email as an extra at best, never a substitute for the button.
The Help Center says only one phone number can be reviewed per appeal, so a company with two banned numbers files one request for each. If the decision goes your way, download the official app, verify the number and restore the backup. If the backup is end-to-end encrypted you need the password or key, because WhatsApp can't restore it without them.
Temporary and permanent WhatsApp bans: how to recognize each notice
Not every lock screen is a ban, and each notice calls for a different response. Start with the exact wording. A notice that your account may be restricted soon is a warning that recent activity looks like spam, automation or bulk messaging. That is the moment to stop writing to strangers and check what is connected to the account.
A notice that your account is currently restricted is one step below a ban. You can keep talking to people you already chat with, but you can't start chats with new contacts, create groups, add members or use linked devices. The Help Center says the restriction lifts on its own after a set period. To see the time left, tap New chat and pick someone you have never talked to.
A temporarily banned account has its own cause. The Help Center says this notice usually points to an unofficial app or to data scraping, the automated collection of numbers, profile photos and status updates. The fix is to switch to the official app or stop scraping; otherwise the account may be banned for good. Industry guides mention a countdown in the app, but the official text we read sets no duration.
“Account in review” was the notice that appeared in the August 2026 wave. Gulf News quoted the screen saying that account activity and device info were being checked against the terms of service, with results usually within 24 hours. Here the review is already running, so all you can do is wait and not try to work around it. If a ban notice follows, use Request review.
“This phone number can't use WhatsApp” is the ban itself. With Request review on screen you can still appeal; without the button it is final. There is also the lock for inactivity, which is not a punishment: the Help Center asks you to confirm your number as soon as possible, because the account and its data may be deleted. Confusing the two only costs you time.
Appeal templates: personal account and business
Some screens only ask you to pick a reason, and others open a text box. When there is a box, write little and tell the truth: who you are, how you use the number and what has changed since the block. Don't threaten, don't paste legal language and don't claim what you can't back up. The templates below are starting points, and anything in brackets depends on your case.
Template for a personal account: “I have used this number for [time] to talk to family, friends and colleagues. I got the ban notice on [date], around [time]. I only use the official app and I don't send bulk or automated messages. I don't recognize the violation and I'm asking for a review of the account. [If it applies: I bought this SIM in [month], and someone else may have used the number before.]”
Template for a business on the WhatsApp Business app: “This is the customer service number of [company], a [type of business], website [address]. We talk to customers who contact us and to people who agreed to hear from us. We got the ban notice on [date]. We use the official app, and on [date] we checked linked devices and removed [tool]. We are asking for a review because this is how our customers reach us.”
Template for an API appeal in Business Support Home: “Violation [name shown in the panel], dated [date]. Our contacts gave permission through [source], recorded in [system]. [Choose: we dispute the violation because [reason] / we acknowledge the issue and fixed it this way: [what changed].] We removed people who asked to opt out and reviewed template [name]. We are requesting a review.”
Keep Social Security numbers, ID photos and card numbers out of any text, and never give a password or verification code to anyone claiming to speak for WhatsApp. If the official screen asks for something, answer only there. Keep a dated copy of what you sent, because it will be useful if you need to file a complaint later.
Why numbers get banned: Terms of Service, reports and messaging without consent
The Help Center gives spam, scams and activity that puts users at risk as examples. The Terms of Service go further and list bulk messaging, auto-messaging and auto-dialing as impermissible, along with non-personal use without authorization. The Messaging Guidelines, updated on September 23, 2026, include repeated unwanted contact.
Reports and blocks count. The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says people can block or report businesses and that, based on that feedback, systems may limit how much you can send. The same policy explains that enforcement combines automated processing and human review, including reported messages. That is why a cold list fails even with polite copy: someone who did not ask for the message hits block.
Messaging without consent is the typical case for sales teams. Buying a list, importing old contacts or sending promotions to someone who only asked for a quote are all ways to collect blocks. The guide to bulk messaging on the official API shows how to run campaigns with approved templates, to people who agreed, without relying on tools outside the rules.
A ban rarely comes with a detailed explanation. The complaints gathered by Reclame Aqui talk about blocks with no clear reason. So run the diagnosis yourself: how many messages went to numbers outside your contacts last week, who has access to the phone, which extensions are in the browser, which system scanned the QR code, and whether anyone pasted the same text into many groups.
GB WhatsApp, extensions and unofficial APIs: why they take your number down
The Help Center calls unofficial apps fake apps that imitate WhatsApp and names some of them, such as GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp, TM WhatsApp and TeleMessage. They break the Terms, and WhatsApp says it can't validate their security practices. The risk goes beyond the penalty: installing one hands your account to software WhatsApp itself can't verify.
The rule reaches back in time. The Help Center article on linked devices says linking your account to an unofficial app or website, now or in the past, may result in a temporary or permanent ban, and that the account could end up sending spam and scams. This is where “unofficial API” tools that connect through a QR code, and browser extensions that automate WhatsApp Web, come in.
The Terms also bar creating software or APIs that work substantially like the Services and offering them to third parties without authorization. So a vendor promising “unlimited sending with no templates” is selling something outside the rules, and the owner of the number carries the risk. Before signing, ask how the number connects. If the answer is a QR code, you know what kind of product it is.
The fix has an order. Under Linked devices, disconnect anything you don't recognize. Remove unofficial apps from the phone before installing the official one, download it from WhatsApp's website or the app store and register your number again. The Help Center warns that only history created in the official app can be safely backed up, and that transferring chats from an unofficial app isn't guaranteed.
What happened in the August 2026 wave of WhatsApp blocks
On August 3, 2026, users in Brazil and other countries reported being disconnected and seeing the account-in-review notice, according to CNN Brasil and Gulf News. One person said the screen appeared right after sending a good-morning message to a business account. WhatsApp did not say how many accounts were affected.
In a statement to the Brazilian press, the company said it fights misuse and admitted it can sometimes make mistakes. According to Gulf News, a spokesperson said enforcement systems can flag accounts incorrectly and that it was working to restore legitimate ones. The cause was not explained. Sites that name a specific bug or claim a pattern among the accounts hit go beyond what Meta has said.
On August 8, Brazilian news site g1 published a report on people locked out for over a month who say they broke no rule and complain about getting no explanation. They included personal and WhatsApp Business accounts, with reports of lost contact with customers. Some cases predate the wave, and CNN Brasil recalls similar blocks in November 2025.
Reclame Aqui gives a sense of scale for Brazil. According to its survey, published by Tecnoblog on September 23, there were 9,978 complaints about blocks, bans or suspensions from January to August 2026, up 152% from 3,953 in the same period of 2025. August alone had 2,802. These are complaints, not banned accounts: the total number of cases is not public.
If the review fails, the digital-law specialist in the g1 report suggests an order for Brazil: exhaust the platform's channels, complain to consumidor.gov.br or Procon, send a formal notice and only then go to court. In the US and Canada, the Terms send most disputes to binding individual arbitration, with exceptions such as certain small claims. Keep screenshots and dates. This is not legal advice, so talk to a lawyer if your business lost money.
WhatsApp Business account banned on the official API: Meta's penalties, step by step
On the official API the logic changes. Meta applies the platform's enforcement policy to the WhatsApp Business Account, or WABA, and repeat violations move you up the ladder. The documentation mentions spam, misclassified templates and high-risk categories. Too much negative user feedback can also lead to limits or removal. The appeal moves from the phone to a dashboard.
The first step is usually a warning naming the policy you broke. Then come restrictions of growing length. In the 1 or 3 day ones, the business can't send marketing, utility and authentication templates or add phone numbers. In the 5, 7 or 30 day ones, it can't send any message and can't add numbers either. A restriction at that level stops the whole operation, customer service included.
Above that is the account lock, with no end date, which only comes off through an appeal. And if the business doesn't change after multiple warnings, it can be permanently disabled; the documentation doesn't say how many warnings that takes. Severe cases such as scams, child exploitation, terrorism and illegal drug sales lead to immediate removal, with no steps in between.
The Business Messaging Policy adds a point few guides mention. When an account is terminated for a violation, WhatsApp may bar you and your organization from using its products and services in the future. So the penalty can reach the company, not just that number. That changes the math for anyone thinking of starting over with another SIM or under another company in the group.
The warning arrives in four places: the Business Manager Notifications Center, a banner in WhatsApp Manager, an email to all admins and the account_update webhook. Make sure at least one admin has an email someone reads every day. A warning sitting in a former employee's inbox is the easiest way to find out too late.
How to appeal on the API: Business Support Home, timing and error codes
The appeal lives in Business Support Home. In Meta Business Suite, open All tools and then Business Support Home; if needed, go to Account Overview, the speedometer icon. Select the messaging account, choose the violation, click Request Review, fill in the details and submit. The case moves to the In Review tab. These are the names the documentation uses.
Meta says the decision typically takes 24 to 48 hours and comes through Business Manager. The result is Unchanged, when the violation stands, or Reversed, when it is overturned and the account returns to its previous status. Restricted or disabled accounts can appeal too. There is one exception: not all spam violations can be appealed, and sometimes you can only wait for the restriction to end.
If you came to the API through a Meta partner, go to that partner first. The platform's support page reserves Direct Support for enterprise developers and partners and tells end customers to contact their partner. Ask them for a screenshot of the violation, the template history and the date of the last warning, because the appeal needs to show what changed.
Error codes help separate a penalty from an ordinary limit. 368 means the account was restricted or disabled for breaking a policy. 131031 is the same restriction, but it can also come from a wrong two-step verification PIN. 131048 is a restriction from too many messages blocked or marked as spam. 131064 comes from template classification violations and lifts by itself after the period. 131042 is about payment and lists a suspended account among its causes.
Don't confuse these with error 131049, which holds back marketing to protect ecosystem engagement, or with 131056, too many messages to the same recipient, or with 131057, maintenance mode. None of them is a ban. The guide to Cloud API errors covers other common codes in daily operations.
To monitor without relying on someone checking the dashboard, use the Health Status API: the can_send_message field returns AVAILABLE, LIMITED or BLOCKED, and a block comes with the reason and a possible solution. In the account_update webhook, ACCOUNT_RESTRICTION carries the type and expiration date, and DISABLED_UPDATE reports the ban state: DISABLE, SCHEDULE_FOR_DISABLE or REINSTATE. Connect that to an alert for your team.
Quality and limits: the signs that show up before a block
Limits and quality are not penalties, but they show where the account is heading. The messaging limit counts how many unique numbers a business can reach outside the customer service window in a rolling 24 hours. According to the documentation, it starts at 250 and goes to 2,000, 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited. It applies to the portfolio and is shared by all its numbers.
Each template's quality shows as green, yellow, red or unknown, based on use, customer feedback and engagement such as read rates. At red the template is paused: 3 hours the first time, 6 the second and disabled the third. Errors 132015 and 132016 mark those states. Other templates keep working, but a pattern of low quality can affect the number.
Treat yellow as an alarm. Stop that template's campaign, check where the list came from, how long ago each contact gave permission and how many messages they got this month. Remove anyone who asked to leave. Only then rewrite the copy. Changing the wording while keeping the same list doesn't fix the cause, and negative feedback keeps adding up.
Coexistence, the same number on the app and the API, is part of this too. The documentation says a customer can be disconnected from the platform due to enforcement, and the account_update webhook reports it. Don't count on the app as a safe side of the API: agree with your team who uses what, and under which sending rules.
Protecting your operation: opt-in, the official API and a backup number without evasion
Start with permission. The policy requires opt-in and makes the method your responsibility. GDPR Article 7(1) says the controller must be able to demonstrate consent, and in the US the FCC's TCPA rule requires prior express written consent for autodialed marketing texts. Brazil's LGPD puts the burden of proof on the controller too. Record where, when and for what people agreed, and honor every opt-out. See the opt-in guide.
The official API removes the risk of modified apps, QR codes and extensions, because the number talks to the platform through an authorized channel. It gives no immunity: the penalties above apply to API users as well. What changes is that you get warnings, deadlines, a dashboard and an appeal, and chat history no longer lives on a single phone.
A backup number is legitimate when it exists for a technical failure, such as a lost phone or SIM, or for another unit of the business. It stops being legitimate when it is used to keep the same sending going after a penalty. The Terms are clear: if your account is disabled or suspended, you agree not to create another one without permission. A backup number is no way out of a ban.
On the API, a backup number has two practical limits. A new portfolio can register two numbers, rising to 20 after verification or on reaching the 2,000 limit. The sending limit is shared across all numbers, so a second number gives no extra capacity. And restrictions block adding numbers, which means you can't register a backup in a hurry during a penalty.
Run a monthly review: linked devices, who has access to Business Manager, which tools are tied to the number, template quality, blocks from recent campaigns and your opt-out list. A platform makes that routine simpler. CCX Messages is a Meta Business Partner and technology provider, and the number runs on the official API, with templates and campaigns in one dashboard.
Contingency plan: how to reach customers if your number goes down
The right question is this: if your number disappears at 10:00 today, how does a customer reach you at 10:05? Write the answer now. List the channels each customer has agreed to, such as email, SMS, Instagram, Telegram and website chat. Keep your contact base and open orders off the phone. Decide who makes the call, who writes and who updates the website.
In the first hour, put a notice at the top of your website, in your email signature, on your Instagram profile and on your Google business profile. Send a message only to people with an open chat, order or contract. This is a service notice, so leave promotions out. Say what happened without blaming Meta and without promising a deadline you don't control.
Notice template: “[Company]'s WhatsApp has been unavailable since [date]. Your order is proceeding as normal. To reach us, use [email] or the chat at [website]. We have not opened another WhatsApp number, and we never ask for a password, a code or payment to a new contact. We will update you here when it is back.”
The end of that notice matters. A scammer may use your absence to show up with a new number and your logo on the profile. By saying which channel is official and what you never ask for, you reduce that risk before it starts. Include your website address and official email, so customers can check for themselves.
What gets you through that day is having customer service off a single phone. In a unified inbox, the team answers email, SMS, Instagram, Telegram and website chat in the same queue, with history stored off the device. That is how CCX Messages works, and it doesn't prevent a Meta penalty: it only keeps customers served while the appeal runs.
When the number comes back, don't pick up where you left off. Fix the cause first, resume only with people who gave permission and watch blocks and quality closely over the first few days. Write down what happened, how long it lasted and what the plan lacked, so you can improve the next version.
What not to do when WhatsApp bans you: new SIMs, number warming and scams
Don't change numbers to get away. A new SIM, a disposable SIM or a number in someone else's name used to keep the same sending going goes against the Terms, which bar creating another account without permission. The Messaging Guidelines list trying to undermine integrity systems as prohibited behavior. Besides the risk of another penalty, the company loses the chance to show it fixed the problem.
Don't spend money on “number warming”. Meta's messaging limits documentation doesn't mention it: what opens the way up is verifying your business, being verified by a partner or sending 2,000 delivered messages in 30 days with high-quality templates, then keeping quality high. Simulated chats to warm up a SIM are an attempt to fool the system, and they treat the symptom instead of the cause.
Don't pay for an unban. Search for how to get unbanned and you will find people selling shortcuts, but the Help Center says plainly that third-party services can't ban your account or lift a ban. Anyone selling that is selling what they can't deliver, and may also ask for your verification code. Never give a password, code or PIN to someone who says they are from support.
Don't go back to the modified app “just to recover the chats”, don't install another extension to test and don't request a review through a friend's account. Don't use the API as a back door either. Meta's documentation doesn't present migration as a remedy for a ban, and the policy can reach the organization. Settle the appeal first and plan any migration afterwards.
Finally, don't delete the account or throw away the SIM while the case is open. You need the number to verify the account, and the backup stays tied to it. And don't blast an announcement to your whole base on the first channel you find: an SMS or email to people who never agreed creates a new problem on another channel.
